CARBONATE HARDNESS
Hardness of water is the property by virtue of which it does not give sufficient lather when mixed with soap. This occurs due to presence of divalent cations of Calcium and Magnesium which form precipitates in combination with soap.
Presence of bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium causes temporary hardness in water. The hardness is termed 'temporary' as it can be removed easily by boiling the water or adding lime. This hardness is also called carbonate hardness.
When water that has temporary temporary hardness is boiled, Carbon dioxide escapes and Calcium Carbonate gets precipitated and the temporary hardness of water is removed
