OTHER MATERIALS USED AS FILTER MEDIA

• Sometimes, anthrafilt is used as filter media
• Anthrafilt is made from anthracite, which is a type of coal-stone that burns without smoke  or flames.
• It has been successfully used as a filter media in two or more layers in the western world
• It is cheaper and gives a high rate of filtration
• As it is not available in India, research is being carried out in the Central Public Health Research Institute, Nagpur, to determine the suitability of bituminous coal as a substitute to anthracite
• However, sand continues to remain the principal filter medium
